About the course

Our BA in Ethics, Value and Philosophy at the University of Reading invites you to explore core concepts of truth, reality, morality, and societal norms, fostering critical challenges to established views. This programme develops logical thinking, critical argument evaluation, and the ability to question personal and others' ideas. As one of the few universities offering this degree, we emphasise moral philosophy and value theory, taught by renowned experts in ethics, mind, and language. You will also engage with non-Western philosophies, particularly Indian traditions, in small, interactive seminars that promote discussion. In your second and third years, delve deeper into specialised topics like environmental and business ethics, metaphysics, and philosophy of religion, with options for study abroad in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, or Australia. Core modules include Reason and Argument, Great Works in Philosophy, The Meaning of Life, Ethical Argument, Oppression, Inequality, and the Enemies of Democracy, plus a dissertation or independent learning module. Note that modules are subject to final approval and availability; for details, visit the programme page.
