Our MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry or Research is a four-year programme designed for those pursuing careers in chemistry, offering hands-on training through a paid industry placement or overseas research year. In the first two years, students build a strong foundation in core chemistry topics, then select specialised options such as polymers, organic synthesis, catalysis, and biomolecular modelling. The third year involves a placement with a UK or international chemical or pharmaceutical company, or at a partner university, enhancing practical skills and career preparation through established university links.Upon returning, students advance to master's-level modules and undertake an extended research project, providing a realistic insight into chemical research. Sample modules include Mathematics for Chemists, Fundamentals of Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table, Shape, Structure and Reactivity in Organic Chemistry, Polymers in Nature and Industry, Macromolecular Chemistry and Nanotechnology, and Chemistry Practicals. Note that module availability is subject to final approval and may change; for updates, visit our course page.
The following modules have been approved in principle for delivery in 2025/26. Please note that as part of our current curriculum improvement process, all modules require final University approval and may be subject to change. Please check our website for more details about the course structure. Sample modules for this course include:
