About the course

Discover the enduring legacy of ancient Greco-Roman cultures through our BA in Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Reading. This joint degree integrates the study of ancient history—covering political, military, social, and cultural aspects—with hands-on archaeological training. Students explore the vibrant societies of Greece and Rome from approximately 2000 BC to AD 600, examining their influence on subsequent eras and the modern world. Archaeological components extend further into the past, expanding geographical perspectives and offering the thrill of real discoveries. Notably, the University ranks in the top 100 globally for Archaeology (QS World Rankings by Subject, 2024).Core modules include Archaeology Today: Methods and Practice; Early Empires: Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome; Greek History: War, Society, and Change in the Archaic Age; and Roman History: The Rise and Fall of the Republic. These have been provisionally approved for 2025/26, subject to final university confirmation and potential changes. Optional modules may vary in availability, with updated details forthcoming in summer 2024. For further information, visit the programme page.
