About the course

Religion is profound, inspiring, and divisive, playing a crucial role in understanding diverse cultures and one's own. At the University of Nottingham, students explore the evolution of religious ideas, practices, and identities, alongside the insights from theology and ethics on contemporary issues, and the influence of religious beliefs on science, philosophy, art, and literature. Our diverse staff, including theologians, philosophers, biblical scholars, historians, and sociologists, enrich perspectives through studies of God's nature, interfaith relationships among Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and resources like video libraries, fostering a supportive community for cultural understanding. The programme begins with core modules providing a comprehensive overview of theology in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, complemented by optional modules for broadening knowledge, such as learning ancient biblical Greek. In the second and third years, students select mostly optional modules tailored to their interests, including biblical Hebrew for original text analysis. The final year requires a dissertation, allowing in-depth exploration of a personally fascinating topic, enhancing skills in a flexible, interdisciplinary environment.

What you will learn

Your first year gives you a thorough overview of the fundamentals of theology across Christianity, Judaism and Islam through a series of core modules. You'll also be able to choose optional modules that build on existing knowledge or allow you to explore something new. You can start learning ancient biblical Greek or study something outside of Theology - maintain an existing interest or get a different perspective on a theological issue. Your second and third years are mostly optional modules. You'll be able to take your learning in the way that suits your interests as you develop. As well as biblical Greek you can also start learning biblical Hebrew - allowing you to read texts in their original form. There is a compulsory dissertation in the final year. This is an extended piece of work that gives you the time to concentrate on a subject that fascinates you.
