About the course

Our four-year MEng in Product Design and Manufacture integrates creativity with engineering principles, offering an extra year for advanced skill development through design projects and deeper exploration of materials, manufacturing, and human factors. This program produces high-quality work, resulting in graduates with impressive portfolios that are highly sought after by employers. Product designers address a range of issues, from everyday inconveniences to global challenges like climate change, by applying creative, engineering, and manufacturing expertise to create viable solutions. The course employs cutting-edge technology, including digital sketching, 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and virtual reality, to prepare students for the modern design landscape. Students engage in a broad curriculum covering manufacturing, materials, ergonomics, marketing, and more, with project-based learning in sectors such as medical, automotive, and electronics. Key projects emphasize realistic design, incorporating engineering knowledge for mass production and commercial viability. Taught by academics with industrial experience and active professionals, the program ensures relevance to current industry needs. In the first year, students build foundational engineering and design knowledge; the second focuses on design skills and group projects; the third involves a major design project and dissertation; and the fourth includes an industry-based project with a manufacturing review.
