The digital era is reshaping how we create, collaborate, share, and present music. This course explores these changes, providing a strong foundation in key repertoire and historical contexts. Students gain practical experience in studio and location recording, composing with digital audio workstations, music production, sound to picture, synthesis, sampling, sound design, collaboration, and performance. Performance opportunities abound through student ensembles, on-course collaborations, university-wide orchestras and choirs, and the city's vibrant music scene.In the first year, core modules develop knowledge of music theory, performance, and technology applications, with options to explore personal interests or other subjects. The second year focuses on digital music theory and audio manipulation, allowing specialization and professional placements. In the third year, emphasis shifts to advanced production and recording skills, with choices for optional modules and dissertations.
The first year develops your core knowledge of theory, and performance with the aesthetics and application of technology. You'll also be able to choose optional modules will allow you to begin exploring special interests. You can also choose to study other subjects (perhaps approaching a music topic from another angle), learn a language or explore an unrelated passion. In year two your core module will focus on digital music theory and how the latest technology can help you compose, create and manipulate audio. Your choice of optional modules allow you to build on existing interests or explore new ones. You can gain professional experience with our Work Placement module. Many year two modules are also offered as year three options. In year three, your core modules develop your specialised knowledge and skills in production and recording. You can also choose from a wide range of optional modules including the opportunity to write a dissertation on a subject of your choice.
