This MMath programme invites those eager to explore advanced mathematical modelling techniques, gain insights from cutting-edge research, and apply knowledge through a placement year. You will study key topics under dedicated mathematicians, engaging with their ongoing research in areas such as medicine, biotechnology, epidemic modelling, fluid mechanics, statistical machine learning, algebra, number theory, and mathematical finance. The course builds problem-solving and analytical skills, while enhancing transferable abilities in project work, group study, and presentations, which you can apply during your industry placement. In the first year, all students pursue core modules in algebra, probability, statistics, and foundational pure and applied maths. Subsequent years allow specialisation through optional modules, with the fourth year dedicated to an industrial placement supported by a tutor. The final year offers greater flexibility in module choices and includes a compulsory dissertation, fostering self-directed study, report writing, and presentation skills for future careers.
All students follow a common programme of study for the first year. You will focus on core modules that provide a solid foundation in the main mathematical topics. You'll build on your existing knowledge in areas such as algebra, probability and statistics. There will also be an introduction to key mathematical concepts in pure and applied maths. During the second and third year, alongside compulsory modules you will start to specialise, by choosing from a range of optional modules. You will spend the fourth year on an industrial placement. You will be allocated a placement tutor who will keep in touch and check on your progress throughout the year out. The final year provides you with even more freedom to choose optional modules in the areas that interest you. The compulsory dissertation takes place across the whole year. It gives you the opportunity to focus on self-directed study under the supervision of a member of staff. You will gain valuable skills and experience such as report writing and presentation skills, that may be useful for your future career.
