About the course

The University of Nottingham's School of Physics and Astronomy boasts a rich history of innovation, highlighted by Professor Sir Peter Mansfield's 2003 Nobel Prize for inventing Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners, which have aided over half a billion people globally. Recent advancements in quantum technologies are revolutionizing the detection and treatment of neurological conditions. Research spans cutting-edge areas, from quantum mechanics at ultralow temperatures to the Universe's largest structures. Our physics courses, including the accredited Mathematical Physics BSc—jointly taught by the Schools of Mathematical Sciences and Physics and Astronomy—offer flexible optional modules in topics like cosmology, quantum physics, medical imaging, relativity, differential geometry, and black holes. Students can specialize in areas of interest, transfer between programs after year one, and engage in research projects, paid summer internships, and outreach via the PhysSoc society and mentoring scheme. Innovative teaching, including the student-centered MSci with minimal final-year exams, is shared globally through the Sixty Symbols YouTube channel. Notably, 98% of our research is rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
