Enhance your passion for history by acquiring essential skills in research, writing, and debate. The program covers historical periods from the early medieval era to the present, with a global focus on regions such as Europe, Africa, and Asia. Modules draw from the latest research by tutors, linking historical perspectives to contemporary issues including conflict, politics, the environment, religion, social attitudes, consumerism, gender and identity, and health humanities. In the first year, introductory modules establish a foundational knowledge base, exploring diverse periods, regions, and approaches to prepare for advanced study. Year two offers choices in medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary history across various global areas and methods. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation, specialize in a historical area, analyze primary sources, and select two optional modules from a broad array of themes, places, and periods.
Our year one modules are designed as an introduction. They build everyone's knowledge to the same level, so you are ready to progress to year two. You will sample history from all periods, from all across the world, and using many different historical approaches. In year two, choices range from medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary history, exploring many different global regions and using a variety of historical approaches. In year three, you will work on your dissertation as well as focus on a specialised area of history and develop your analysis of primary sources. You will also take two optional modules from a wide range of themes, places and periods.
