Electronic engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the production of technologies such as drones, electric vehicles, smartphones, navigation systems, and hospital equipment. This course fosters a comprehensive understanding of electronics through hands-on lab projects, individual and team-based work, project management, and problem-solving applications. In your third year, you will complete an industry placement, remaining registered with the university and supported by regular tutor meetings. Graduates will be well-prepared to innovate in evolving electrical control systems. All electrical and electronic programs share core content in the first two years, enabling specialization by year three, with the five-year MEng offering deeper insights for Chartered Engineer status. In year one, students cover foundational topics like engineering mathematics, power and energy, and information systems. Year two emphasizes design skills through modules including electrical energy conditioning, electronic processing, communications, and practical solutions. The third year focuses on industrial placement, while year four includes advanced mathematics, analogue electronics, and optional modules. The final year involves an individual project aligned with departmental research.
All students follow a common programme in year one and you will study topics such as engineering mathematics, power and energy and information systems. In year two, you will develop your design skills through a variety of lab based subjects. Modules include electrical energy conditioning and control, electronic processing and communications and practical engineering design solutions. The industrial placement is completed in your third year. Year four core topics include advanced engineering mathematics, analogue electronics and integrated circuits and systems, as well as a range of optional modules. In your final year you will undertake an individual project and study state-of-the-the-art technologies. In many cases this project contributes to the major industrially related programmes undertaken by research groups within the department.
