This course appeals to those intrigued by ancient civilisations and their influence on the modern world. It integrates the study of ancient Greek and Roman literature, history, art, and culture with English language, literature, and drama from Old English to the present. Students explore diverse topics in ancient society, such as the Aeneid, religion, violence, comedy, and adaptations in film or theatre. Options include learning ancient Greek or Latin for deeper textual insight and valuable linguistic skills. In English, modules cover applied linguistics, drama, medieval literature, and works from 1500 onwards, including novels, poetry, and plays. The programme begins with foundational first-year modules in Classics, introducing Greek and Roman history, culture, literature, and archaeology, alongside core English modules on language, literature, and performance. In the second year, students select from options in ancient literature, culture, art, and history, plus English modules across at least two areas. The final year allows for a dissertation in either field or a combined topic, with additional optional modules in English from various disciplines.
