As a chemical and environmental engineer, you will address key areas such as waste disposal, environmental compliance to mitigate spills and emissions, flooding and drainage management, infrastructure development, pollutant control, land recovery from mining or farming damage, water supply and sanitation, as well as sectors like food, energy, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, and oil and gas.The course fosters engineering expertise and professional skills for designing essential products, while building transferable abilities in project management, business, finance, analytics, and teamwork. It includes options for a paid one-year industrial placement or study abroad, and is accredited by the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and IOM3, meeting UK Engineering Council standards. The curriculum features a shared first year for foundational knowledge, transfer options to other courses, an industry-focused group project in year three, and a study load exceeding 40 hours weekly through lectures, tutorials, and self-directed work.
You will share the same first year across the department - developing knowledge of the engineering fundamentals, science and design. At the end of year one you can elect to transfer to any of the courses offered by the department. In year three, in addition to advanced modules, you will undertake an industry-focused group design project, which simulates a commercial environment and will allow you to develop and demonstrate valuable skills for your future career as a professional chemical engineer. Through lectures, group study and tutorials combined with coursework and self-study, you may spend over 40 hours a week on your studies.
