About the course

BA (Hons) Media Studies equips students to explore the profound impact of 21st-century media on digital society, fostering advanced critical and creative skills for this evolving landscape. As a dynamic discipline, it encourages speculation, experimentation, and creativity, reflecting the mediatized nature of modern life. Media are deeply intertwined with economic, social, cultural, psychological, technical, and environmental issues, necessitating critical thinking about global changes and our roles within them. The Lincoln School of Film and Media provides a collaborative environment with experienced faculty, motivated students, and guest speakers, emphasizing research and diversity. The programme structures modules across three years: first-year courses introduce foundational and emerging media perspectives alongside creative skills; second-year focuses on visuality, digital cultures, gaming, and specialized topics like horror or experimental forms; third-year includes independent research projects and advanced studies in media's political contexts. Assessment varies by module, incorporating coursework, exams, portfolios, group work, and presentations, delivered by experts and supported through peer learning.

What you will learn

In the first year, modules introduce both seminal perspectives and new directions in media studies. Students will also have the opportunity to develop key creative communication skills in contemporary media practice modules. In the second year, modules will focus more closely on themes of visuality and aesthetics, digital and auditory cultures, and the logics and practices of gaming. There will be further options to explore topics such as horror in popular culture, practices of listening, and modernism and experimental forms. Students will be expected to develop their creative practice portfolios, providing a chance to attune them to the contexts and concerns of digitality. In the third year, students will have the opportunity to embark on a major independent research project and creative portfolio, as well as engage in advanced studies of the political and philosophical contexts of contemporary media. Students can also choose from a variety of optional modules.
