Philosophy systematically employs reason and argument to address profound questions about knowledge, life, morality, science, and human nature. The department organizes reading parties for students in the Highlands and supports a thriving undergraduate Philosophy Society.Central and East European Studies explores the dramatic upheavals in the region's countries during the twentieth century, including wars, revolutions, and extensive social and economic changes that have perpetuated ongoing challenges. Spanning from the Baltic to the Balkans and Berlin to Vladivostok, it examines key issues. The University hosts a government-funded Centre of Excellence for Russian, Central, and East European Studies, which facilitates cultural, social, and academic events. Students may optionally study languages such as Hungarian, Czech, Polish, or Russian.
