English Language and Linguistics examines the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, revealing insights into our culture, society, and identity.At the University of Glasgow, we have taught this subject for over 75 years, with staff who are leaders in their fields. We developed the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English—a unique resource tracking the semantic evolution of its vast vocabulary—and maintain dedicated laboratories for analysing spoken and written language. Graduates become experts in language, communication, and rigorous text analysis, opening diverse career paths in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, dictionary-making, and teaching English abroad in Europe, Asia, or South America.
