English Language and Linguistics explores the structure and meaning of English, past and present, illuminating insights into culture, society, and identity. French examines a key European and global language alongside the cultures it has shaped worldwide.At the University of Glasgow, we have taught English Language and Linguistics for over 75 years, led by field experts. We pioneered the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English—a unique resource on its vocabulary's semantic evolution—and offer dedicated labs for spoken and written language analysis. French studies span diverse topics, including comics, song, travel writing, medieval France, and contemporary history. Graduates gain expertise in language, communication, and rigorous textual analysis, opening careers in media, publishing, marketing, speech therapy, teaching (domestically and abroad), journalism, tourism, translation, interpreting, Civil Service, business, and commerce.
