The 20th century brought dramatic shifts to Central and Eastern Europe through war, revolution, and social-economic upheaval. The fall of communism sparked ongoing changes, including rising populism, the Russo-Ukrainian War, and instability in the Caucasus and Central Asia. This programme examines key issues from the Baltic to the Balkans and Berlin to Vladivostok, alongside Classics, which explores the literature, history, art, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome, with optional Latin or Greek study.At the University of Glasgow, with over 75 years of leading research, students gain insights into global challenges like the Russia-Ukraine conflict via the Centre for Russian, Central & East European Studies, a national hub hosting the Europe-Asia Studies journal and extensive library resources. Optional languages include Czech, Polish, Russian, or Ukrainian; Honours students receive funding for archaeological visits to Italy or Greece, plus year-abroad options. Graduates pursue careers in government, diplomacy, NGOs, journalism, education, and business, with Classics opening paths in heritage, law, publishing, and IT.
