MArtH Art History (Integrated Masters), MArts (Hons), with study abroad

At Essex, students gain a comprehensive foundation in visual culture history, encompassing canonical art and architecture as well as underrepresented elements like medical photography, tattoos, and protest artifacts. This program equips learners with skills to forge connections between visual forms, interdisciplinary developments, and wider social-political contexts.The four-year MArtH program (five years with a placement or abroad option) builds core Art History knowledge and skills in the first three years, followed by MA-level modules in the final year for advanced exploration and drafting a journal article. Topics span digital media, curating, museums, heritage, Latin American art, contemporary art, and art-human rights intersections. MA offerings include critique and curating, current research in Art History, curating Latin American art, curating inside out, and heritage-human rights. Essex ranks 6th in the UK for Art History research excellence (REF 2014), with expert staff teaching from year one, and optional modules available for personalized study.
