About the course

Who determines the placement of statues in public spaces? How do museums and galleries select collections for display? What strategies protect heritage from threats like war or disasters, and what ethical issues arise in preserving and exhibiting cultural objects? The BA in Art History, Heritage and Museums Studies provides a multidisciplinary foundation in art history, heritage, and museum theories. Students gain a broad understanding of visual culture, exploring celebrated art and architecture while addressing overlooked elements. The program examines heritage preservation, including ethical and legal debates, display methods, spectatorship, and community involvement. Key topics include the history of museums, curatorial ethics, heritage management, modern art, politics in museums, and the role of new technologies. No A-Level in Art is required; diverse perspectives are valued. At Essex, ranked 6th in the UK for Art History research (REF 2014), expert faculty teach from the first year, with optional modules available for personalized study.
