About the course

Anatomy involves examining the body's structure, including the relationships among organs and tissues at both gross and microscopic (histological) levels. In the initial two years, students engage in modules from the School of Life Sciences, building a strong foundation in physiology, biochemistry, and associated biomedical sciences. As the program advances, learners gain comprehensive knowledge of human body development from embryonic stages to maturity. This includes hands-on full-body dissection using Thiel-embalmed cadavers, exploration of key anatomical techniques, and an independent research project. The University of Dundee was the first in the UK to adopt the Thiel embalming method, which preserves fascial layers, maintains flexibility and colour in cadavers, and provides a superior, innovative alternative to traditional preservation. Our faculty boasts extensive expertise in human identification, forensic anthropology, craniofacial analysis, and body studies.
