About the course

If you possess a vivid imagination for crafting new worlds and characters, the BA (Hons) Games Arts degree at UCA Farnham offers a practical, accredited program by The Rookies. This course emphasizes workflows in 2D concept and 3D art for video games, building skills in modelling, texturing, and asset creation—such as characters, environments, and props. Students utilize state-of-the-art facilities with advanced hardware and software, while collaborating with peers from other games courses and leveraging industry connections to companies like Rebellion, SEGA, and Creative Assembly. Graduates emerge prepared for careers in the global games sector. The curriculum progresses from foundational art and software skills in Year 1, including observational drawing and 3D production, to exploring gaming history and theory in Year 2 with projects like a game prototype vertical slice. In Year 3, students engage in self-directed projects and dissertations, fostering expertise for professional practice. Related programs include BA (Hons) Animation and BSc (Hons) Games Development.

What you will learn

In Year 1 you'll learn the key art skills and software knowledge needed to communicate ideas and create tangible art assets in the context of entertainment design and games development. You'll explore observational drawing practice and 3D art production, as well as game concepts, design and programming. In Year 2 you'll investigate the historical, theoretical and aesthetic dimensions of gaming practice. Working in a studio environment centred around industry roles, you’ll produce a ‘Vertical Slice’ for an original game prototype. You'll also construct an AAA studio style prop based on a photograph or concept of your choosing. In Year 3 you'll undertake self-directed pre-production of an individual or group project, and produce a dissertation relating to the contextual and/or theoretical concerns of your chosen area of practice.
