The BDes Honours in Design is a dynamic studio-based programme specialising in Product Design, Ceramics, and Silversmithing & Jewellery. It adopts an experimental philosophy focused on materiality and hands-on making, fostering sustainable and innovative practices across these fields. Students explore new design territories for products, objects, and artefacts by blending traditional craftsmanship with advanced technologies, addressing challenges like sustainability in manufacturing methods. The Product pathway emphasises human-centred design for areas such as industrial and service design, while Ceramics and Silversmithing & Jewellery pathways prioritise design-through-making. Participants develop core skills in design thinking, research, prototyping, and visual communication through 3D CAD and CAM. Taught by expert staff with international profiles, the programme includes industry briefs and access to state-of-the-art workshops in the Belfast School of Art, aiming to produce critical thinkers and skilled leaders in design.
