Sheffield’s BDS Dental Surgery programme provides practical, hands-on experience in dentistry from the outset. In the first year, students visit dental clinics and explore their role within the dental team. As skills develop, placements in general dental practice enhance proficiency. This five-year course integrates nine themes, spanning human anatomy, oral disease, and clinical practice. Year one covers body structure, function, and healthy oral anatomy. Year two focuses on comprehensive patient care across lifespans, while year three emphasises holistic treatment. The final two years address complex care for all ages, disease recognition, diagnosis, prevention, elective placements, and self-selected studies. Qualifications are quality assured by the General Dental Council for registration as dentists, hygienists, therapists, nurses, clinical dental technicians, technicians, and orthodontic therapists.
