About the course

Approximately 150 million people worldwide speak Russian, the official language of four countries and widely understood in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, with large communities in China, the US, Israel, and Western Europe. As the world's largest country, Russia holds significant global cultural and political influence, making Russian Studies and Social Policy an ideal joint honours combination. This four-year programme, including a Year 3 abroad in a Russian-speaking country, develops advanced Russian language skills (speaking, writing, reading, listening, translating) from beginner level, alongside exploration of Russophone literature, culture, history, and politics. Social Policy examines social and economic change, policy-making processes (UK, EU, OECD), and areas like health, welfare, education, labour markets, family, and childhood. Emphasising international comparisons and empirical research, it fosters collaborations with governments, NGOs, and international organisations. Edinburgh's vibrant cultural and political scene enhances studies, producing graduates with valued language, humanities, and global perspectives.
