About the course

This joint honours programme enables you to study the languages and cultures of Russia and Scandinavia (Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish)—two influential regions of modern Europe. No prior knowledge is required; through intensive language training and a full year abroad, you will develop advanced spoken and written proficiency. Alongside language classes, explore Russophone, Scandinavian, and Nordic culture via courses in literature, history, politics, and comparative themes.Edinburgh, a world-leading festival city and the only Scottish university offering joint honours in Scandinavian Studies, integrates a year abroad into its unique four-year structure. Pre-honours years (1-2) provide core grounding plus flexible options across disciplines; honours years (3-4) include immersive study abroad and tailored specialisation. Gain fluency in two languages, intercultural skills for global careers, and access to societies, libraries, and the Northern Scholars Scheme.
