About the course

Approximately 150 million people worldwide speak Russian, making it the official language of four countries and widely understood in Eastern Europe. Combining Russian studies with philosophy provides insights into contemporary global issues and historical contexts, enhancing understanding of Western intellectual traditions. This four-year joint honours programme at the University of Edinburgh allows students to develop advanced skills in Russian—speaking, writing, reading, listening, and translating—regardless of prior knowledge, with courses tailored to different levels. Students will explore Russian literature, culture, politics, and history, while philosophy courses foster clear, systematic thinking about profound questions, introducing key philosophers and examining the foundations of beliefs. With a legacy in Russian studies since 1919 and philosophy dating back to figures like Adam Ferguson, the programme offers flexibility in Years 1 and 2, leading to specialised honours years and graduates equipped with sought-after language, humanities, and international skills.
