About the course

Many foundational concepts of Western society originated in ancient Greek and Latin, alongside influential literary and cultural works in Russian, an East Slavic language. Studying Russian and Classics at Edinburgh illuminates the past and contemporary world, opening doors to Russian-speaking communities in China, Central Asia, and the United States. This flexible four-year joint honours programme, the oldest of its kind in Scotland, builds advanced Russian skills—from speaking to translation—in streamed Year 1 courses for all levels, while exploring Russophone literature, culture, politics, and history. Classics pathways include Ancient Greek, Latin, or non-language options, delving into the scholarship that shaped the West. Pre-honours years offer broad options across disciplines; honours include a Year 3 abroad for immersion and Year 4 specialization. Graduates gain valued cultural breadth, language fluency, and employability in Edinburgh's vibrant, heritage-rich setting.
