About the course

German and Russian cultures have influenced one another over centuries through cultural exchanges, migration, mobility, and conflicts. With German as the first language of over one-third of Europeans and Russian spoken by approximately 150 million people worldwide, this flexible joint honours programme offers intensive language study, including time abroad, to develop advanced spoken and written proficiency in both languages, even for beginners. In addition to language classes, students explore Russophone and German-language culture from the Middle Ages to the present, covering literature, film, and theatre in their historical, political, and social contexts. Edinburgh, as a vibrant festival city and global capital, provides an ideal setting for cultural studies. The programme includes a full academic year abroad and allows flexibility in Years 1 and 2 with optional courses across disciplines, leading to specialisation and a graduate profile combining broad cultural knowledge with specialised skills highly valued by employers internationally.
