About the course

German and Russian cultures have influenced each other for centuries through cultural exchange, migration, and conflict. Over one-third of Europeans speak German as a first language, and around 150 million people worldwide speak Russian. This four-year joint honours programme at Edinburgh allows you to study these widely spoken languages in their global cultural contexts, with no prior knowledge required—we stream Year 1 courses by experience. Through intensive language training, including a full year abroad (study or work placement), you will gain advanced spoken and written proficiency while exploring Russophone and German-language culture from the Middle Ages to today, including literature, film, and theatre in historical, political, and social contexts.Edinburgh, a world-leading festival capital, offers unique advantages: centuries-old teaching of both languages, flexible pre-honours years for broadening skills, and tailored honours years culminating in a dissertation. Graduates acquire specialist language skills and broad cultural education valued globally, with access to exceptional libraries and creative opportunities.
