About the course

This joint honours programme allows you to study French and Russian—two of the world's 10 most spoken languages with profound global cultural influence—in their cultural contexts. Through intensive language training, including a full year abroad, you will develop advanced spoken and written proficiency. Complementing language classes, you will explore Francophone and Russophone cultures from the Middle Ages to the present, covering literature, cinema, political history, social movements, and philosophy.Unique in Scotland, Edinburgh offers this four-year programme with a guaranteed academic year abroad (study or work). Taught for over a century, it provides grounding in languages and cultures in Years 1-2 (with optional courses), immersive experience in Year 3, and specialized honours study, translation skills, and a dissertation in Year 4. Graduates gain valued specialist skills and intercultural awareness for global careers, amid Edinburgh's vibrant festival scene, libraries, and creative opportunities.
