French, a major global language spoken across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, has profoundly influenced international literature alongside English-speaking cultures. This joint honours programme develops critical, analytical, linguistic, and creative skills through language learning and engagement with diverse texts in English and French. In French studies, intensive training—including a year abroad—builds advanced speaking, writing, reading, and translating abilities, while exploring francophone literature, cinema, history, social movements, and philosophy from the Middle Ages to the present. For English Literature, based in Edinburgh—the first UNESCO City of Literature—students gain skills in close reading of poetry, drama, and prose from the late Middle Ages onward, with flexible course options. This combination fosters openness to new ideas, valued in global careers, and includes a full year abroad for specialization and broad cultural education.
