This joint honours programme allows you to study the languages, literatures, and cultures of China and Russia—two global powers pivotal in contemporary politics. With around 1.5 billion native speakers combined, Chinese and Russian open doors to opportunities in Europe, East and Central Asia, and North America, where Russian-speaking communities thrive in China and growing numbers of young Russians learn Chinese. You will develop advanced proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese and Russian for social and professional use, including reading, writing, translation, speaking, and listening. Courses cover literature, cinema, political history, international relations, and social movements in Chinese, East Asian, Russian, and Russophone contexts, plus Russia's transnational mobility and diasporas in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Edinburgh, a world-leading festival city, is Scotland's only provider of Chinese single and joint honours, uniquely offering three Chinese entry levels (ab initio, upper beginner, intermediate) and two for Russian; heritage learners welcome. The four-year degree includes immersive Year 3 abroad in China/Taiwan and a Russian-speaking country, fostering fluency, research skills, and access to societies, libraries, and creative pursuits.
