This joint honours programme enables you to study Chinese and German, exploring the histories, literatures, and societies of their respective regions. Mandarin Chinese, the world's second most spoken language, provides access to a global economic power, while German, Europe's most common first language, is vital for business and politics. Edinburgh uniquely offers three entry levels for Chinese (ab initio, upper beginner, intermediate) and two for German, including ab initio; it welcomes heritage learners but not native speakers.Over four years, including a year abroad in China/Taiwan and a German-speaking country, you will achieve advanced proficiency in both languages, alongside expertise in history, literature, culture, politics, and more. Pre-honours years build foundations and research skills; honours years focus on tailored topics and translation. Benefits include fluency in Asian and European languages, access to societies, libraries, creative writing, and the UK's only such programme with flexible Chinese entry.
