About the course

This joint honours programme enables you to study Chinese and French in the context of the histories, literatures, and societies of the countries where they are spoken. With over two billion native speakers, these languages provide access to diverse cultures and career opportunities in Europe, East Asia, Africa, and North America. You will develop advanced proficiency in both languages for social and professional use, focusing on reading, writing (including translation), speaking, and listening. The curriculum explores global French culture and specialised knowledge of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and related diasporas, including literature, cinema, political history, international relations, social movements, and philosophy. At Edinburgh—the only Scottish university offering such programmes—you'll study over four years, with immersive Year 3 abroad in China or Taiwan and a French-speaking country. Graduates are prized for fostering understanding between Chinese, French, and British cultures.
