Edinburgh, the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, has inspired great writers for centuries and hosts a vibrant Gaelic community and cultural scene. This four-year joint honours programme combines the literatures, languages, and cultures of the Celtic world—from medieval Irish and Welsh to contemporary Gaelic Scotland, Ireland, and Wales—with English literature across historical periods. Beginners can progress to advanced Scottish Gaelic, while pathways allow specialization in oral traditions, poetry, sociolinguistics, and more. Housed in the UK's oldest English Literature department, it builds skills in critical reading and cultural analysis. The first two pre-honours years provide a broad foundation with core and optional courses across arts, humanities, and social sciences. Honours years focus on your interests, including advanced Gaelic if chosen. Graduates gain versatile skills valued globally, with access to exceptional libraries, societies, and creative writing opportunities in Scotland's capital.
