Arabic and Spanish, two of the world's most widely spoken languages, form an excellent joint honours combination. Our four-year programme develops written and spoken proficiency in both, while exploring their cultural impacts and historical interactions—from Islamic Spain (711–1492 CE) to today. Year 3 features a full academic year abroad for immersion, with flexible courses in other years tailored to your interests.Designed for beginners (including heritage learners), Arabic opens access to the Middle East's intellectual heritage, history, and politics for over 350 million speakers. Spanish, official in 20 countries, covers its evolution, varieties, and cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean, with options like Basque or Catalan. Pre-honours years provide grounding; honours years refine skills abroad and through specialised studies in literature, Islamic/Middle Eastern, and Spanish/Latin American topics. Graduates gain valued cultural education and fluency, amid Edinburgh's historic language teaching tradition, societies, libraries, and creative opportunities.
