About the course

Arabic and French, two of the world's most widely spoken languages, form an excellent joint honours combination. This four-year programme develops written and spoken proficiency in both, while exploring their cultural impacts and historical interactions, from medieval Chansons de Gestes to contemporary cinema and music in Europe and North Africa. Year 3 features a full academic year abroad for immersion, with flexible courses in other years tailored to your interests.Designed for beginners (including heritage learners), Arabic study grants access to the Middle East's rich heritage, achieving fluency for in-country study by Year 3. French advances to expert level, with options like Basque fundamentals, covering Francophone literature, cinema, history, and philosophy from the Middle Ages to today. Graduates gain valued cultural breadth and specialist expertise, studying in a historic city with renowned libraries, societies, and creative opportunities.
