About the course

Classical Greek heritage has profoundly influenced Islamic and Western thought since the 12th century CE via Arabic translations. The enduring connections among Arabic, ancient Greek, and related civilizations make this an ideal joint honours programme.Arabic, spoken by over 350 million people from the Atlantic to the Persian Gulf, ranks as the world's sixth most widely spoken language and one of the UN's six official languages, with communities in Western Europe and Latin America. No prior knowledge of Arabic or Greek is required. By Year 3, students gain skills for a year abroad in an Arabic-speaking country. The four-year programme (including Year Abroad) provides grounding in Years 1-2, immersive experience in Year 3, and tailored honours in Year 4. Benefits include studying ancient and modern languages in a historic city with 18th-century Arabic teaching traditions, access to societies, libraries, and rich Mediterranean cultures.
