About the course

This degree programme immerses students in Welsh literature and poetry while exploring the social, cultural, and political history of the Welsh language. It offers opportunities to study a broad range of texts, from medieval bardic traditions to modern protest songs, and build foundational skills in oral and written Welsh, grammar, linguistics, and translation. Taught by leading Welsh authors and scholars, including Chief Bards and award-winning writers, the programme includes work experience, optional modules in gender, culture, and creative writing, and access to scholarships. Ranked second in the UK for Celtic Studies, it provides strong employability support through university services and a vibrant campus community on Swansea Bay.In the first year, students take a mix of compulsory and optional modules, such as Defnyddio'r Laith and Trawsieithu. Later years feature a wide array of optional subjects, including Hawliau Laith yn y Cyd-destun Rhyngwladol and Cyfraith Hywel, culminating in an independent dissertation. Assessment methods vary, incorporating podcasts, website building, oral presentations, and book reviews, alongside traditional exams and essays, to develop research, analytical, and communication skills.
