About the course

Our Philosophy with a Year Abroad degree explores major philosophical theories and debates across diverse traditions, addressing fundamental questions about human existence, ethics, and reality from historical and contemporary perspectives. With a practical emphasis, it encourages students to apply these ideas to real-world issues, fostering skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis. Students examine topics such as knowledge, morality, politics, and logic, drawing from ancient Greek thinkers to modern theories, while developing transferable skills that enhance career prospects in areas like HR, finance, marketing, civil service, and teaching. Notably, 92% of graduates are in employment, study, or other activities 15 months after leaving (HESA 2023).The programme includes compulsory modules in the first year, such as Critical Reasoning and Introduction to Ethics, followed by a mix of compulsory and optional modules in later years, including Contemporary Moral Controversies and Philosophy of Mind. Assessment incorporates essays, exams, presentations, group work, and original writing. Students also undertake a year abroad between their second and final years, gaining global experience at partner institutions, and complete a final-year dissertation.
