About the course

In an era where technology, transportation, and a complex global economy are shrinking the world, the importance of peaceful and cooperative international relationships cannot be overstated. International relations form a cornerstone of global citizenship, and our BA International Relations with Modern Languages degree stands as one of our flagship programs. This dynamic field examines globalization and global institutions, development and human rights, international and regional politics, peace and conflict, political economy, security studies, and strategic studies, revealing how power, institutions, and laws shape everyday life.Students study a modern language—French, Spanish, or German—at advanced (post-A-level) or beginner level, alongside vocational modules in translation and professional language use. This four-year program includes a third-year industry placement for hands-on experience and employability development, supported by our extensive industry network and dedicated team. Modern Languages at Swansea ranks first in the UK for Teaching Satisfaction (Guardian University Guide 2025) and Learning Opportunities (NSS 2024), second for Teaching and Student Voice (NSS 2024), and fifth overall (Guardian University Guide 2025). The flexible curriculum features specialist modules tailored to career goals, fostering language proficiency, research, and analytical skills. Opportunities include a year abroad for study, teaching, or work, plus final-year options like the Welsh Assembly Placement Scheme and Parliamentary Studies Module. Graduates pursue diverse careers in education, government, humanitarian organizations, business, media, law, and public services, with placements at firms like Westminster Forum Projects, the Labour Party, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
