About the course

This four-year BSc in Applied Linguistics and English Language equips students to examine English structures, language production, comprehension, and the effects of language choices. It prepares graduates for diverse fields such as healthcare communication, AI, education, policy-making, forensic analysis, and multilingual communities. Students gain practical skills through collaborations with industry partners, access to on-campus resources like eye-tracking suites and language labs, and a dedicated year in industry. Ranked first in the UK for learning opportunities and fifth for teaching (NSS 2023), the program leads to careers in speech therapy, healthcare, and education, with options for extracurricular activities and a year abroad. The curriculum features compulsory modules in the first three years, including Language in Mind, Grammar and Meaning, and Sociolinguistics, alongside optional ones like Child Language and Literacy or Forensic Linguistics. Assessment includes a mix of examinations, essays, presentations, group work, and oral exams, fostering strong research and communication skills. A final-year independent dissertation is required.
