Criminology and Sociology, BSc (Hons), with industry placement

Our integrated Criminology and Sociology degree combines two complementary social sciences, exploring the evolution of sociological and criminological perspectives and their relevance in modern society. Students gain comprehensive knowledge of key issues such as substance use, housing, and poverty, while developing transferable skills for employment in social sciences and beyond. Based in the School of Social Sciences, the programme offers a vibrant environment, with Criminology ranked in the top 15 in the UK for teaching satisfaction and top 20 overall (Guardian University Guide 2024), and Sociology in the top 5 for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2024). Additionally, 92% of graduates are in work or study 15 months post-graduation (HESA 2023).The curriculum includes compulsory modules in the first year, such as Individuals and Society and Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, followed by a mix of compulsory and optional modules in subsequent years, including topics like Crime, Drugs and Alcohol, and Poverty and Social Justice. Assessment methods vary, incorporating essays, examinations, blogs, vlogs, and personal reflections to build research and analytical skills. For a four-year course, the third year involves an industry placement with dedicated employability support.

Your first year of study is made up of compulsory modules covering a range of themes. Compulsory modules are studied by all students on the programme, meaning you are automatically enrolled. Examples of optional modules in recent years have included: • Crime, Drugs and Alcohol • Poverty and Social Justice • Philosophy, Mental Health and Illness • An Introduction to Policing in England and Wales • Understanding Terrorism & Violent Extremism Your final year will include an optional independent dissertation project.
