About the course

Chemistry is part of everything in our lives – it’s the key to understanding our world, and this Masters level degree will equip you with the skills and experience for a wide range of exciting and rewarding careers in a variety of industries. Chemistry at Swansea is ranked 6th in the UK for overall satisfaction by the National Student Survey 2021. Our Chemistry Department has excellent links with employers, and Chemistry graduates are in demand, obtaining roles such as cancer researcher, forensic scientist, flavourist & innovation director, chief chemist, sustainability manager, fragrance chemist, household goods senior scientist, and analytical scientist. The Royal Society of Chemistry is in the process of accrediting our degrees, which will make your MChem Chemistry even more valuable in the jobs market. Swansea University is ranked Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, the highest ranking for teaching in universities. You will be taught in our sector-leading teaching laboratories within the new multi-million-pound Chemistry Hub, which provides a world class facility for cutting edge chemical sciences and interdisciplinary research. This ensures you are exposed to the full range of opportunities which a degree in Chemistry can offer.Teaching is informed by our current excellence in research, in areas such as natural products, materials engineering, and medicine, and the Chemistry Department is currently working on vital projects such as delivering clean water and sanitation and affordable, clean energy in the developing world. On this four-year course, you will have the opportunity to study the main branches of chemistry - organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and instrumental and analytical techniques. The course will develop both your theoretical and practical skills, including lab classes that incorporate a blended, e-learning pre-lab workshop to ensure that you are confident and competent to work in the labs safely and efficiently. You will also be able to use the innovative pre-lab simulation to practise lab skills in your own time. The MChem degree builds on the solid foundation of the BSc course, but explores the main topic areas in further depth. The defining feature of the MChem is a substantial research project, embedded in a research group.Typically, your research group will include a mix of postgraduate students and research staff and has the potential to result in publishable work. Uniquely, these projects can sit within other colleges as well as Science, such as Engineering or Medicine, to further your specialism. MChem degrees are a good first step towards professional chemist status and an introduction to independent research.“After an open day looking around the Chemistry Department, I knew instantly I wanted to study in Swansea. There were great facilities, friendly academics passionate about their research and a beautiful location right next to the beach. As an undergraduate, and now as a researcher, I always felt there was a great support network on hand and there were plenty of events going on around campus to get involved with. It’s the ideal place to study.” - Rachel Woods, Research ChemistWe guarantee that you will be made a conditional offer for a course at Swansea University. Subject requirements will apply.
