History and Linguistics, BA (Hons)

Starting in September 2024, the School of Arts and Humanities, including this course, will relocate to our City Campus, with no changes to the course content. Applicants should have received an email detailing any potential impacts.This joint honours degree in Linguistics and History equips students to analyse language's role in constructing and constraining meaning, while exploring diverse historical contexts from medieval times to the present across Britain, the Americas, Asia, and the Far East. Ranked joint third in the UK for Linguistics student satisfaction (NSS 2020), the programme builds critical thinking, analytical skills, and creative communication without requiring prior knowledge of grammar or languages. History modules, informed by expert research, emphasize independent study and offer placements with over 250 East Midlands museums. Graduates develop interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities, leading to careers in recruitment, therapy, law, journalism, and more, with 100% of Linguistics students employed or in further study within six months (DLHE 2016/17). 94% of History students recommend the course (NSS 2020).
