About the course

Acting for Screen covers a variety of contemporary performance disciplines, including drama for feature films, television presenting, and digital promotion via social media. This course equips students with essential skills and attributes to thrive in these fields, fostering development within a dynamic community of diverse creatives. As a specialist arts university, we provide access to film studios, production equipment, and guidance from industry professionals, alongside an Industry Speaker programme for real-world career insights. The curriculum progresses through three years: Year One focuses on storytelling and performance techniques, supported by filmmaking basics; Year Two explores industry practices and personal development; and Year Three culminates in creating a final filmed piece, deepening theoretical understanding and preparing graduates for screen industry careers. Opportunities for collaborations, networking, and external engagements are emphasized throughout.

What you will learn

Year one – You will explore the processes of storytelling and the techniques of performance. Workshops in acting and performance technique will be supported by developing skills in the basic processes of filmmaking to provide the context for developing your craft with an informed perspective and purpose. Year two – Alongside developing your personal work and its context within film and screen outputs, your second year includes opportunities to consider current industry approaches through professional practice programmes. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced industry professionals, who will provide you with feedback and guidance on your work. Year three – You will distil and extend your practical skills and experiences in the creation of a final piece for filmed performance, as well as explore opportunities to work collaboratively. You will choose and explore an element of acting theory in depth in order to gain a deeper understanding of your work. At the conclusion of the final year you will be ready to take the next steps along your career path within the screen industries.
