This BEng degree equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to join engineering teams upon graduation. It complements the four-year Durham MEng, with transfer possible up to the end of the second year. The first two years provide a broad engineering foundation, identical to the MEng, before specializing in Electrical Engineering in the third year. The program offers flexibility, allowing pathway changes, such as from mechanical to electrical engineering, and includes opportunities for overseas study or industry placement between years two and three. A key feature is the final-year Engineering Project, where students collaborate one-to-one with an academic expert on a technical challenge. In the first year, students study core modules like Solid Mechanics and Structures, Electronic and Electrical Systems, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Practice, and Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, plus optional modules such as Introduction to Programming. Assessment in the first two years mainly involves examinations with coursework elements in areas like CAD and engineering design, while the final year focuses more on coursework, including a technical dissertation project.
