About the course

This degree integrates sociology and criminology to examine social issues such as crime, victimisation, justice, and punishment, while exploring their connections to inequality, marginality, identity, power, and control. Students will investigate individual motivations behind criminal behaviour, its consequences, and develop skills for careers in criminal justice. The course, designed by experienced educators and practitioners, prioritises student support, offers optional modules for personalisation, challenges conventional views on crime, and includes insights from real-world experts and organisations. The programme features a common first year with shared modules like Understanding Society and Crime, Disorder and Social Control, followed by advanced topics in year two, such as Contemporary Issues in Crime and Justice. A optional placement year provides practical experience, and the final year includes specialised modules like Punishment and Penology, culminating in a final project. Assessment methods include essays, presentations, and group work, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of student progress.
