Medical Engineering, BEng (Hons), with industry placement

Medical engineers apply engineering principles to develop medical treatments, diagnostic technologies, and devices that enhance and save lives, working in areas such as clinical instrumentation, bioengineering, and beyond. This accredited programme equips students with essential knowledge, skills, and practical experience to become proficient medical engineers. Participants engage in authentic engineering challenges, both individually and collaboratively with peers from other disciplines, fostering teamwork and communication. Access to an open makerspace supports design and collaboration, while opportunities to interact with professionals from institutions like the Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre and companies such as Biomet provide real-world insights. Additionally, students can undertake a salaried placement in various locations, including abroad, to gain professional experience, as exemplified by past placements at P&G, Johnson & Johnson, and the NHS.The programme's distinctive features include professional accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, meeting requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration and partially for Chartered Engineer. It offers industry-standard facilities, including specialised laboratories and computer suites, alongside interdisciplinary content through links with fields like Biosciences and Dentistry. A year-long industrial placement provides paid work experience, complemented by a strong emphasis on hands-on design and practical work in dedicated spaces.
