About the course

For those passionate about immersing themselves in books, writing, or drama, Brunel’s English BA offers an engaging exploration of literature’s rich history, encompassing diverse periods, genres, and storytellers through key themes. The programme begins with a 'Reading Resilience' module to build essential skills for literary analysis, followed by first-year courses on modern and foundational texts to enhance critical reading. In subsequent years, students select from a wide array of optional modules, spanning Shakespeare and Jane Austen to postcolonial literature, women’s movements, and contemporary genres like science fiction and horror.Throughout the degree, students are encouraged to express creativity in coursework and seminars, fostering growth as critics and writers while developing prized employability skills, such as strong written and verbal communication, teamwork, and interdisciplinary analysis of themes in history and politics. A placement year provides practical work experience, boosting graduate prospects, while extracurricular activities through the Brunel Centre for Contemporary Writing, including the Hillingdon Literary Festival, offer opportunities for inspiration and engagement. Sample modules include Literary London, World Literature, Musical Genres Through Time, and Writing and Difference; for full details, visit the Brunel website.
