Optometrist
Optometry is a healthcare profession concerned with the health of the eyes and related structures, as well as vision, visual systems, and vision information processing in people.
Optometrists are trained and licensed to provide primary vision care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes, which includes prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses and detecting certain eye abnormalities. They are not medical doctors and will refer patients to other healthcare practitioners (such as ophthalmologists) for further management if there are medical or surgical requirements.
In Singapore, one in two children aged twelve and above wear spectacles, while four in five adults are myopic. These alarming statistics have earned us the unofficial title of the “myopic capital” of the world. Optometrists in Singapore therefore stand at the forefront in the prevention and correction of myopia.
Currently, the recognised local qualifications for optometry are the diploma programmes offered by Ngee Ann Polytechnic or Singapore Polytechnic. Unfortunately, earning bachelor degrees in Optometry is slightly trickier - there are degree programmes conducted by the Singapore Optometric Association Academy, but other than that, no other degree programme is available locally, so going overseas is the most viable option for aspiring optometry students.
Optometrists in Singapore generally practise in hospitals and relevant government agencies, but may also opt for private practice.
